Planning for Growth: Building a Simple Financial Roadmap
When people hear "financial plan", they often picture a thick document that sits in a drawer. For most small businesses, something much simpler works better: a one-page roadmap that you actually look at.
Start with where you are
Pull together last year's revenue, expenses and profit, and how much cash you have today. If your books are up to date, this should take minutes.
Decide where you want to go
Pick two or three goals for the next 12 months. Keep them specific – "grow revenue by 15%", "hire one full-time employee", "build three months of cash reserves".
Work out what it takes
For each goal, ask what it will cost and what it will bring in. Hiring someone means salary, payroll taxes and training time. Growing revenue might mean more marketing or new equipment. Put rough numbers on each one.
Build a simple monthly budget
Spread your expected income and expenses across the year. Watch for months where cash will be tight – seasonal dips, tax instalments or large purchases – and plan for them in advance.
Check in every quarter
Compare what actually happened with your plan. Adjust where needed. A roadmap is only useful if you keep it current.
